This portrait depicts Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Bender, one of the most influential Breslov figures of the post-war generation and a central force in re-establishing Breslov life in the Land of Israel.
After the Holocaust, Rabbi Bender came to Jerusalem to transmit the living tradition of Breslov as it had been practiced in Uman, Ukraine. Until then, Breslov teachings were known in Jerusalem largely through books. Those who wished to understand how a Breslov chassid truly lived — in conduct, character, discipline, and inner service — came to learn directly from him.
He became a foundational figure in shaping the Breslov community in Jerusalem, admired for his patience, calm temperament, and exceptional clarity of mind. His life was marked by careful use of time, consistency, and quiet devotion. Nothing was left unintentional; every moment carried purpose.
In this work, the artist chose to focus closely on the rabbi’s face, setting aside titles and reputation in order to observe the human presence itself. The aged features, thoughtful gaze, and restrained palette speak silently of a life shaped by responsibility, endurance, and inner steadiness. The portrait invites the viewer to encounter the figure not through historical description, but through direct, unguarded observation — allowing the face itself to convey what words often cannot.
